Ayushman Bharat Rolled Out in Delhi
The Delhi government, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the central government to roll out the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in the capital. This initiative, a key promise in the BJP’s manifesto for the Delhi Assembly elections, aims to broaden access to affordable healthcare for residents of the city.
With this development, Delhi becomes the 35th state or Union Territory to adopt the nationwide health insurance scheme. West Bengal remains the only state yet to implement AB-PMJAY.
The Delhi government and the National Health Authority (NHA) have signed an agreement to implement the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB-PMJAY) in the capital. The signing took place in the presence of Union Health Minister JP Nadda, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and other senior officials.
The NHA, which oversees the nationwide rollout of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, will be responsible for its execution in Delhi as well. Notably, the BJP government, which returned to power in Delhi after more than 26 years, approved the scheme’s adoption in its very first cabinet meeting—just days after CM Rekha Gupta and her ministers were sworn in on February 20.
What is the Ayushman Bharat Scheme?
The Ayushman Bharat scheme offers free, cashless healthcare for over 1,960 medical treatments spanning 27 specialties. This includes hospitalization, ICU care, surgeries, diagnostic services, and medications.

In Delhi, eligible families will benefit from a health insurance cover of ₹10 lakh annually—split between ₹5 lakh provided by the central government and an additional ₹5 lakh contributed by the Delhi government as a top-up.

A citywide awareness and enrollment drive will soon begin to register eligible beneficiaries and kickstart the scheme’s implementation.
