Atal Bihari Vajpayee was born in the city of Gwalior in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh in the year 1924. He studied at Victoria College in Gwalior and the DAV College in Kanpur. After graduating, he worked as a journalist for a short time before joining the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a Hindu nationalist organization.<\/p>\n
Vajpayee entered politics in the 1950s, and he was elected to the Lok Sabha, the lower house of India’s parliament, in 1957. He served in various ministerial positions in the governments of Lal Bahadur Shastri and Indira Gandhi. In 1977, he became the leader of the Janata Party, which formed the government after the Emergency. However, the Janata Party government collapsed in 1980, and Vajpayee returned to the opposition.<\/p>\n
In 1998, Vajpayee led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to victory in the general elections. He was the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full five-year term.
