World Tourism Day 2023: Celebrating Recovery and Investing in a Sustainable Future

World Tourism Day is an annual celebration of the tourism industry, held on September 27. It was created by the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) to raise awareness of the importance of tourism in promoting cross-cultural understanding and economic development.

In 1979, the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) declared World Tourism Day to be celebrated on September 27th each year. The first official celebration took place in 1980. On this day, countries and organizations around the globe and promote tourism and encourage people to rediscover and explore history, luxury, heritage, cultures, places, and adventure.

The theme of the  day 2023 is “Tourism and Green Investment.” This theme highlights the need for more and better-targeted investments in tourism to support the Sustainable Development Goals, the UN’s roadmap for a better world by 2030.

In other words, it is a day to celebrate the power of travel to bring people together and to promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures. It is also a day to raise awareness of the importance of sustainable tourism practices and the need to invest in tourism to support the Sustainable Development Goals.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused widespread disruption to the tourism sector, but it also presents an opportunity to rethink and reshape the way we invest in tourism for a more sustainable future. This is according to the United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) website.

This year, Saudi Arabia is hosting the UNWTO Executive Council meeting in Riyadh from September 27-28. Over 500 government officials and industry leaders from 120 countries will gather to discuss the theme of “Tourism and Green Investment.”

Tourism plays an important role in fostering mutual understanding, building bridges, and safeguarding cultural heritage and environmental conservation. It also contributes to a more harmonious world and promotes digitalization and innovation.

The global tourism workforce will need millions of new hospitality graduates each year between now and 2030, and an additional 800,000 jobs will require specific vocational training. To meet this demand, we need to invest in people and ensure that everyone who wants to work in this as it  has the opportunity to receive quality training, regardless of where they live in the world.

World Tourism Day 2023 is a chance for the world to celebrate the tourism industry’s recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
