India celebrates Teachers’ Day on September 5th every year to honor the birth anniversary of Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He was the country’s first Vice President and former President, a scholar, philosopher, and recipient of the Bharat Ratna award. He was born on this day in 1888.
Dr. Radhakrishnan was a great advocate for education. He believed that teachers play a vital role in shaping the future of the nation. He once said, “Teachers are the nation builders.”
In 1962, when his students wanted to celebrate his birthday, he requested that they instead observe September 5th as Teachers’ Day. He said, “I am grateful to my students for their affection, but I do not think it proper to celebrate my birthday. I would prefer that this day be observed as Teachers’ Day.”
Since then, Teachers’ Day has been celebrated in India as a day to honor and appreciate the contributions of our Visionaries. It is a day to thank all of them for their hard work and dedication, and for their role in shaping the lives of their students.
On this special Day, students and teachers gather together to celebrate the occasion. They may hold special events, such as assemblies, cultural programs, or sports competitions. They may also present teachers with gifts and flowers to show their appreciation.
Celebrating a day to reflect on the importance of teachers in our lives. It is a day to thank them for their hard work and dedication, and for the role they play in shaping our future.
