Social media platform owner Elon Musk is raising concerns about the impact of excessive social media use on children.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk, a dad of nine, urges parents to limit their kids’ social media use. He recently spoke at a tech conference in Paris, highlighting the potential dangers of unregulated social media for young minds. Previously, Musk admitted he made a mistake by not restricting his own children’s access.
Elon Musk, speaking virtually, warned about social media’s harm to kids. He said these platforms use clever computer programs to keep people hooked by increasing dopamine, a feel-good chemical. Because of this, Musk urged parents to limit their children’s social web exposure.
Musk’s recent comments are part of his larger concern about how social media platforms negatively impact children’s mental well-being. He argues that social sites companies’ fierce competition for user attention harms young people. To illustrate this, he shared the conference video on X, reiterating his belief that excessive social media use harms children due to the constant battle between AI systems designed to trigger dopamine responses and keep users hooked.
In a social site exchange, a user asked Elon Musk what motivated him that week. Musk’s answer offered a glimpse into his personal life. He said “X and kids,” implying that both his work on X (possibly a specific project) and spending time with his children give him a boost.
Elon Musk is a frequent critic of social media, particularly Meta’s Facebook and Instagram, which he accuses of facilitating child exploitation. While he promotes X as a platform tackling child abuse content, controversies, like reinstated abusive accounts, raise questions about its effectiveness.
Elon Musk reversed course on social media access for his children. During a speech last year, he revealed he hadn’t restricted their use, but now believes it might have been a mistake.
Adding to his concerns, Musk expressed a belief that his children had been heavily influenced by content on Reddit and YouTube. He implied some regret about not keeping a closer eye on what they were consuming online.

Expressing concern, Musk said, “Platforms like Reddit and YouTube appear to have significantly influenced my children. In the future, I’ll be more restrictive with their social site access and pay closer attention to the content they watch.”
