Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated three advanced naval combat vessels at the Naval Dockyard in Mumbai on Wednesday, symbolizing a major milestone in India’s defense manufacturing and maritime security.
The commissioned vessels are INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer.

Mumbai, Maharashtra: Prime Minister Narendra Modi dedicated three advanced naval vessels—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—to the nation.

INS Nilgiri is the inaugural ship of the P17A Stealth Frigate Project, developed by the Indian Navy’s Warship Design Bureau. It is equipped with state-of-the-art features to enhance stealth, survivability, and seakeeping, according to the PMO.

INS Surat is the final vessel of the P15B Guided Missile Destroyer Project. Among the world’s largest and most advanced destroyers, it boasts 75% indigenous content, sophisticated weapon-sensor systems, and cutting-edge network-centric capabilities.

INS Vaghsheer is the sixth and final submarine of the P75 Scorpene Project, showcasing India’s advancing expertise in submarine construction. It has been developed in collaboration with France’s Naval Group.

PM Modi Praises ‘Made-in-India’ Naval Vessels
The Prime Minister highlighted the pride in having all three naval combatants—INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer—designed and built in India. PM Modi commented that India is establishing itself as a global maritime power, calling the occasion a landmark moment in the country’s maritime history. He also paid tribute to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, recognizing his visionary role in establishing a formidable navy.

Today marks a significant milestone for India’s maritime legacy, the proud history of the Navy, and the Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative,” said PM Modi. He emphasized that Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj had infused new strength and vision into the Indian Navy.

“On his sacred land, we are taking a major step forward in modernizing the Navy for the 21st century. For the first time, a destroyer, a frigate, and a submarine are being commissioned together, he added.

Defence Minister Commends Ship Commissioning
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh praised the commissioning of the ships, describing it as a testament to India’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean region.

He stated that the historic commissioning of INS Surat, INS Nilgiri, and INS Vaghsheer showcases the strength of the Indian Navy and highlights India’s growing influence in the Indian Ocean region.
