No Power Outages this summer, Power Minister RK Singh asks Companies to Ensure Sufficient Availability of Power this summer

Union Power Minister RK Singh on 9th March asked the companies to ensure sufficient availability of power during the approaching summer months.

He also asked the companies to make sure that there is no rolling black out during the peak summer days. He asked the stakeholders to be attentive and closely handle the situation and take adequate actions to meet the necessary demand during the upcoming summer months.

The Minister also asked Central Electricity Authority (CEA) to see that a “fair and transparent mechanism” is made for the allotment of coal to many states and Union Territories.

In accordance with the Reuters report, India is facing greater risk of night time power outages this summer season, with extends in adding new coal fired and hydropower capacity to direct the increase in demand this time.

The country’s power connection during night hours this April is anticipated to be around 1.7% lower than the demand, informed a government data rechecked by global news provider. Delhi itself is looking at Power Outages with National Capital expecting peak load to come 8000 MW in the last days of June or early July.

The government, in a reconsider meeting headed by RK Singh, has made a multidirectional plan to try and ensure requisite availability of electricity during peak demand period, principally during April- 23 and May- 23.

Coal Based Plants

  •  Power utilities have been supervised to tackle maintenance for coal- based power plants well ahead of time.
  •  Directions issued under section- 11 to each Imported Coal- based plants to function at full power from 16th March’2023.
  • Ministry working towards making requisite coal stocks available at the coal- based power plants.

Gas- Based Plants

  •  The Ministry directed NTCP to run its 5000 MW gas- based power stations during the peak summer.
  •  And, 4000 MW of gas- based power to be added by other companies.

Hydro Plants

  •  The Ministry directed hydro plants to function in negotiation with Regional and State Load Dispatch centers.

The Demand

  •  As per the estimates of Electricity Authority, the highest demand is anticipated to be about 229GW during April month.
