National Handloom Day: A Celebration of India’s Textile Heritage
On August 7, India celebrates National Handloom Day, a day dedicated to the centuries-old tradition of handloom weaving. National Handloom Day is celebrated with events and activities across India, from fashion shows to workshops.

The theme is “Handlooms for Sustainable Fashion.” This theme highlights the environmental benefits of handloom weaving, which is a more sustainable alternative to machine-made fabrics.
The Swadeshi Movement, a boycott of British goods, inspired National Handloom Day.
Today is the day of celebration of the beauty, diversity, and sustainability of the same textiles. It is also an opportunity to honor the hard work of the handloom weavers, many of whom are women.
Although, The handloom industry is a major source of employment for women in India. According to the Handloom Census 2019-20, there are over 35 lakh handloom workers in India, and over 25 lakhs of them are women. This means that women make up 72.29% of the total handloom workforce.
In addition, there are around 16,87,534 women handicraft artisans registered with the Office of Development Commissioner (Handicrafts). This means that there are a total of over 42 lakh women working in the handloom and handicraft industries in India.
Handloom textiles are also a major export earner for India. In 2021-22, India exported handloom textiles worth over $1 billion. This shows that the handloom industry is a valuable contributor to the Indian economy.

Although, The significance of this day is twofold. First, it is a time to commemorate India’s rich history of handloom weaving. People pass down the skilled tradition of handloom weaving through the generations. It is an integral part of India’s cultural heritage. Second, National Handloom Day is an opportunity to acknowledge the significant contribution of this particular weavers to the Indian economy. Handloom weavers employ millions of people, especially in rural areas, and they help to boost the local economy.
In addition to its historical and economic significance, Handloom Day also has a strong environmental message. Natural fibers and traditional techniques make handloom textiles more sustainable.
