Lohri is an Indian Festival of bonfires, delicious foods, presents, enjoyment and light. Not only these but the carnival also celebrated by paying gratitude to the omnipotent and supreme God aside from dancing to the beats of the dhol and amusing oneself of mouth – watering Feast.

The Carnival originally belongs to region of Punjab and mostly celebrated in the northern part of the country. The carnival signifies the end of winter season and the beginning of spring season.

This year the harvest festival of Lohri is celebrated in India on 14 th January, 2023.

Traditions and Customs

1. The Lohri word comes from ‘Tilohri’ that means Til (sesame) and Lohri means Jaggery. The Gur (Jaggery) helps our body in cleansing and provides the nutrients needed for the whole year. People move around deity Agni, who presents with prosperity into the lives, and also sing the Lohri song while moving around the flames.

2. Deity Agni bless us with wealth and prosperity after presenting the offerings to him. Also, the Farmers prays to God Agni to furnish them with abundant harvest and express thankfulness for their crops.

They moves round the flames chanting –
‘Aahar aye dilater Jaye’ that means “may honour reach and poverty leave”.

3. The enjoyment gets bigger in homes that have recently had a wedding or new born baby.

Food Prepared on this Day

People eat many sweet foods prepared on this day that usually involves ingredients like Jaggery, sesame, milk, and nuts. Also kheer, Phirni are some of the most scrumptious feast that are made this day.

1. It is thought that the name Lohri has been derived from ‘lohita’ who is the sister of Holika.

2. It is also believed that if people offer popcorns, Rewari and peanuts to the Pure Fire it will bring favorable and happy time.

3. On this day sun enters the North Hemisphere, which makes Lohri the shortest day of the year.
