JN.1 New Covid variant arrives in India

JN.1 variant sparks concern as India sees Covid cases rise such as 2669 active cases seen in 24 hours today. As per the reports presented by the Union Health Ministry, uprise cases have been seen in Maharashtra, Kerala, Jharkhand, and Karnataka. Yesterday, NITI Aayog member (health) Dr V K Paul said, 21 cases of Covid -19 sub-variant JN.1 have been identified in India.

Late 2023 saw the rise of JN.1 a new sub-variant linked to the BA.2.86 lineage of coronavirus also called Pirola. Separately, two COVID-19-related deaths occurred in Karnataka yesterday as the link to the JN.1 subvariant is still under investigation.

Despite recent drops, Heath Minister warns states– “Covid not over” operated a meeting with representatives of health department yesterday as states urged to stay vigilant as Mandaviya emphasizes close monitoring of COVID cases, symptoms, and severity for a targeted response.
