Indigenous Youth Take Center Stage on World Tribal Day:
World Tribal Day, also known as IWDWIP, is observed annually on August 9 to advocate for and protect indigenous peoples’ rights. This day is a time to recognize their valuable contributions and accomplishments that have improved global living conditions.
Indigenous peoples, 6% of the world, are marginalized despite rich cultures. Although, The United Nations was the first to designate a day to honor indigenous peoples. The primary goal was to protect and amplify their voices. The United Nations General Assembly officially recognized and commemorated the International Day of the World’s Indigenous People in December 1994.
The theme for World Tribal Day 2023 is “Indigenous Youth as Agents of Change for Self-determination.” This theme highlights the important role that indigenous youth play in advocating for the rights of their communities. Indigenous youth are often at the forefront of movements for social justice and environmental protection.
World Tribal Day raises awareness of challenges faced by indigenous peoples around the world. These challenges include poverty, discrimination, and limited access to education and healthcare. World Tribal Day is also a time to celebrate the rich cultural heritage, customs, languages, and knowledge of indigenous peoples. Although, It is an opportunity to build unity among indigenous communities and to raise awareness of their plight among the wider population.
