Hyponatremia: Is Drinking Too Much Water IS Harmful?

Bruce Lee died from Hyponatremia. The study was conducted by a group of Kidney Specialists in Spain. They stated the Kidney’s in ability to excrete excess water killed Bruce Lee, they wrote, adding that Lee possessed multiple risk factors for Hyponatremia (a condition of low level of Sodium in blood)

What is Hyponatremia?

Hyponatremia is a condition when the sodium concentration in the blood  is abnormally low. In this condition the body retains lots of water and dilute the level of sodium in the blood. As a result of this the cells starts to swell subsequently putting a risk on the life of the person.

Is Consumption Of Too Much Water Is Harmful?

There have been a numerous cases of deaths due to consumption of excess water. As consuming too much water can increase intra-cranial pressure which can result in variety of symptoms and, in extreme situations it can be fatal. Dr. Aditya chowti, senior consultant, Internal Medicine Fortis Hospital, told that it is a very rare possibility of someone dying because of excessive intake of water.

“Excessive drinking of water is known as water intoxication or hyper-hydration.” It can provoke disturbances in the electrolytes in our body which can, in turn leads to a decline in sodium level in the body, causing seizures, seizers, cerebral oedema, and eventually, death.

Common signs of Hyponatremia:

  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Headache
  • Confusion
  • Loss of energy level
  • Drowsiness
  • Fatigue
  • Restlessness
  • Irritability
  • Spasms
  • Seizures and coma

How Much Water One Should Drink?

There are no official water consumption recommendations. Even though some sources recommend no more than 0.8 to 1.0 liters of  water each hour to avoid water intoxication. As over intake of water also causes Psychiatric illnesses. Several reasons, including your health and lifestyle demand that you can adjust the total amount of fluids you consume each day.

Preventive Measure To Avoid Hyponatremia

As a general rule you can do some simple calculations to avoid excessive water intake.

Water (in liters) to drink each day = Your weight (in kg) X 0.033

For example, if your weight is 60 kg then you should drink around 2 liters of water each day,

The fact that a human body is made of 60% of water does not protect us from the potentially lethal consequences of drinking water at a faster rate than our kidneys can excrete excess water.
