Every year we celebrate International Men’s Day on 19 th November. This day become important to raise the social problems that Today’s men and boys face and with the motive to celebrate their efforts and attainments in almost every field whether it is social, cultural, economic and political achievements.
Just like we celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 th March, International Men’s day celebrated on 19th November. The only difference here is that the United Nations has not officially recognized International Men’s Day yet. People demands for an International Men’s Day (IMD) had born around since the 1960’s, then further in the year 1999 this day was envisaged and started by Dr. Jerome Teelucksingh from the University of the West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago. He chose 19th November as International Men’s Day just because that day was his Father’s birth date.
The moto was simple he was inspired by his father’s achievements and wanted to highlight his birth day, also to learn importance of good male role models.
The concept was supported by officials of UNESCO and the holiday has been announced in Trinidad and Tobago on International Men’s Day since 1999. Later around 85 countries started celebrating Men’s Day.
Uma Challa who was an Indian men’s advocate, gave her contribution in establishing International Men’s Day as a worldwide celebration. As the information taken from IMD website, “She alone initiated the celebration of
International Men’s Day in India in 2007 to take stand for Men and uncovered the offensive or torture that men put up with in the anti-male legal system”.
