Believed Story Behind ‘Holi’
A king named Hiranyakashayap, the ruler of demons got a boon that no one can kill him either by a human or animal, neither inside nor outside the door, neither at day nor night, neither on water, land, air and neither by a weapon.
The cruel king convinced everyone to worship him, but could not convince his son Prahlada, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. His father gave his sister (Holika) a command to trick Prahlada into sitting on a Pyre but the cloak his sister was wearing to protect herself went upward and encased Prahlada. In the meantime, Lord Vishnu in the Narsimha avatar- (half- lion- half- human) appeared and took the king by the doorstep and killed him.
Another great story behind this Festival is the avatar of Lord Vishnu as Lord Krishna, a dark- skinned playfully complained to his mother about his skin Colour and told him that Radha like him as he is and Radha also agreed to this – Holi is celebrated until Rang Panchami, in the celebration of the divine love between Radha and Krishna.
