First Women’s World Cup wins by Spain

Spain won their first Women’s World Cup trophy on Sunday, defeating England 1-0 in the final. The goal came from Olga Carmona in the 29th minute, and Spain held on for the win despite late pressure from England. Spain has won their first major international trophy, making them the first European team to win the Women’s World Cup since Germany in 2007.

Carmona’s goal was a brilliant strike, as she curled the ball into the far corner of the net from the edge of the box. England goalkeeper Mary Earps had no chance of saving it.

Earps denied Spain a chance to double their lead in the 68th minute when she saved Jenni Hermoso’s penalty. However, Spain’s defense was solid throughout the match, and they were able to keep England at bay for the remainder of the game.

The victory was a remarkable achievement for Spain, given the turmoil the team had been through in the past year. Fifteen players had said they were stepping away from the national team for their mental health, while also calling for a more professional environment. However, the team put all of that behind them to produce a brilliant performance in the World Cup.

England was riding a wave of momentum after winning the European Championship at home last summer.  However, they were without three of their best players, captain Leah Williamson, Fran Kirby, and Beth Mead, who were all injured. This proved to be a major blow, and England were unable to overcome the Spanish in the final.

Despite the loss, England can be proud of their performance in the tournament. They reached the final for the first time in their history, and they played some excellent football along the way.

This is a historic moment for Spanish football, and it is sure to inspire a new generation of players. Spain is now the dominant force in women’s football in Europe, and they will be hoping to challenge for the World Cup title again in the future.
