Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport cracked the top 10 busiest airports in the world for 2023, according to Airports Council International. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson took the top spot, followed by Dubai and Dallas.

Interestingly, the United States holds a strong presence with half of the top 10 busiest airports. Meanwhile, Tokyo Haneda Airport made a remarkable climb, jumping an impressive 11 positions from 16th in 2022 to 5th in 2023.

Highlighting the positive trend, ACI emphasized the civil aviation industry’s impressive rebound, nearing pre-pandemic levels at almost 94%.

ACI reports strong progress in passenger traffic recovery, reaching nearly 8.5 billion globally in 2023. This translates to a 93.8% rebound from pre-pandemic levels and a 27.2% increase over 2022. Notably, international travel recovery is catching up to domestic traffic, highlighting its crucial role in driving industry growth.

Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI) clocked over 72.2 million passengers in 2023, securing a spot among the top 10 busiest airports globally. This is an improvement from its 2022 ranking. Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson took the top spot with over 104.6 million flyers, followed by Dubai (86.9 crore) and Dallas (81.7 crore) airports.

Rounding out the top 10 busiest airports in 2023 are:

  • London Heathrow Airport: 4th place with over 79.18 crore passengers
  • Tokyo Haneda Airport: 5th place with over 78.71 crore passengers
  • Denver International Airport: 6th place with over 77.83 crore passengers
  • Istanbul Airport: 7th place with over 76.02 crore passengers
  • Los Angeles International Airport: 8th place with over 75.05 crore passengers
  • Chicago O’Hare International Airport: 9th place with over 73.89 crore passengers

ACI reports that the top 10 busiest airports handled nearly 10% (806 million) of global traffic in 2023. This represents a 19.8% increase from 2022 and is almost level with pre-pandemic levels (801 million passengers in 2019).
