Neeraj Chopra, the Indian javelin thrower, qualified for the final of the men’s javelin throw event at the World Athletics Championships 2023 in Budapest, Hungary, on Friday.

Chopra topped the qualifying round with a season-best throw of 88.77 meters, which was well above the automatic qualifying mark of 83 meters. He did not need to take his next two attempts.

The distance of 88.77 meters also saw Chopra qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. The qualification window for the Paris Olympics began on July 1, 2023, and the entry standard for the men’s javelin throw event is 85.50 meters.

Chopra is the silver medalist in the men’s javelin throw at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.  He is considered to be one of the favorites to win the gold medal in Budapest.

The final of the men’s javelin throw event will be held on Sunday.

Achieving the entry standard is only the first step in the Olympic qualification process. National Olympic Committees (NOCs) have the final say in selecting athletes to represent their country at the Games.

The Indian NOC will likely select Chopra to compete in Paris, but they may also consider other factors, such as his recent performances and his fitness.

Chopra is confident that he will be selected for the Indian team.

Chopra expressed confidence in his ability to advance to the next round, citing his strong throws during warm-up. I have not competed much this year because I wanted to protect myself from injuries ahead of this competition, but I’ll give my everything at this year’s world championships final on Sunday.
