Chenab Bridge: A New Benchmark in Himalayan Rail Engineering

In a landmark moment for India’s infrastructure development, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today inaugurated the Chenab Bridge in Jammu and Kashmir—the world’s highest railway bridge. This engineering marvel is a key part of the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Railway Line (USBRL) and is accompanied by another national first: India’s inaugural cable-stayed rail bridge at Anji Khad.

Why the Chenab Bridge Stands Out:
Spanning 1.31 km, the project was approved in 2003 and reached completion after nearly 20 years of effort.

Constructed at an estimated cost of ₹1,486 crore, the bridge now holds the Guinness World Record for the tallest railway bridge.

With 28,660 metric tons of steel used in construction, the bridge is capable of withstanding extreme climates, from cold to scorching heat.

Standing at a staggering 359 metres, it surpasses the Eiffel Tower by 35 metres and is about five times taller than Delhi’s Qutub Minar.

Its remote Himalayan location and tough terrain made it one of the most demanding engineering tasks in India’s railway history.

The bridge has been built to withstand wind speeds of up to 266 km/h and intense seismic activity.

A remarkable safety feature enables trains to continue moving, albeit slowly, even if a pier suffers damage.
