Apple is deepening its partnership with AI research lab OpenAI by reportedly securing an observer seat on its board. This news follows Apple’s announcement at WWDC 2024 that they would integrate OpenAI’s ChatGPT technology into their devices. Phil Schiller, Apple’s head of the App Store, will reportedly represent Apple as an observer on the board.
While lacking voting rights, Phil Schiller’s presence as an observer on OpenAI’s board grants Apple valuable intel. This mirrors Microsoft’s position, another major OpenAI supporter with a similar observer status. However, their rivalry in some areas may force Apple to exclude Schiller from certain discussions to avoid conflicts.
