Altina Schinasi: A Pioneer in the World of Eyewear

The 116th birthday of Altina “Tina” Schinasi, an American designer who is best known for creating the popular cat-eye eyeglass frame, is being honored by Google. Schinasi was born to immigrant parents in Manhattan, New York, in 1907. She developed an early passion for art, and after graduating from high school, she traveled to Paris to study painting.

After returning to New York, Schinasi worked as a window display designer for several stores on Fifth Avenue. During this time, she collaborated with and learned from influential artists like Salvador Dalí and George Grosz.

These experiences helped to shape her creative vision, and in 1939, she designed the cat-eye eyeglass frame.

Although, The cat-eye frame was a revolutionary design at the time, as it broke away from the traditional round frames that were popular for women. Venice masks inspired Schinasi.

The cat-eye frame was an instant success, and it quickly became a fashion staple for women across the United States.

Schinasi’s cat-eye frame is a classic design that is still popular today. She is a true visionary who helped to change the way women view eyewear.

Schinasi was inspired by harlequin masks from Venice’s Carnevale. She envisioned eyeglass frames with the same pointed edges, believing that they would accentuate and flatter the wearer’s face.

Schinasi persisted despite rejection from major manufacturers, and her cat-eye eyeglass design became a hit after a local shop owner recognized its potential.  The glasses quickly became popular among American women in the late 1930s and 1940s.

Schinasi’s cat-eye eyeglass frame was a critical and commercial success, earning her awards from Lord & Taylor and recognition from Vogue and Life.

In addition to her design work, Schinasi delved into filmmaking. Schinasi’s documentary about her former teacher, George Grosz, was a critical and commercial success, earning an Academy Award nomination and winning first place at the Venice Film Festival.

Altina Schinasi was a true visionary who continued to explore new artistic pursuits throughout her life. In her later years, she wrote her memoir, “The Road I Have Traveled,” which provides a glimpse into her extraordinary life journey. Schinasi used her creative talents to help others by volunteering as an art therapist.

Although, Schinasi’s cat-eye design continues to influence fashion accessory trends worldwide, almost 100 years after its inception. Schinasi was a visionary in the world of eyewear, and her work continues to inspire designers and fashionistas.
