Prime Minister Narendra Modi received Mauritius’s highest civilian award, “The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean,” from President Dharam Gokhool on Wednesday during a special ceremony in the island nation.

In his acceptance speech, Modi expressed deep gratitude, stating that the honor was not just for him but for 1.4 billion Indians. He highlighted that the award reflected the enduring cultural and historical connections between India and Mauritius, reaffirmed their shared commitment to regional stability, progress, security, and sustainable development, and symbolized the collective aspirations of the global south.

Notably, Modi is the first Indian to be bestowed with this esteemed recognition. He is visiting Mauritius for two days at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam.
