Fit India Campaign: Sunday Cyclists Conquer India Gate.
On Sunday morning at Delhi’s India Gate, Indian Army personnel joined forces with wrestler and MMA champion Sangram Singh for a cycling event organized under the Fit India campaign.
Despite Delhi’s intense cold spell, over 300 cycling enthusiasts gathered at Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium on Sunday morning to participate in the nationwide campaign Fit India Sundays on Cycle.
The spirited cyclists began their journey from Major Dhyan Chand National Stadium at 8 am, riding towards Vijay Chowk via Kartavya Path. Along the way, they paused at India Gate to capture photos, cheer each other on, and raise slogans of “Bharat Mata ki Jai!”
This week’s event, part of the Fit India campaign launched in December 2024, was led by wrestler and MMA champion Sangram Singh. Joining him were Indian Army personnel. The event promoted the importance of fitness through cycling—an activity that also contributes to reducing Delhi’s pollution. It further highlighted the critical message of saying no to drugs.
Sangram Singh, a Fit India icon, said, “I firmly believe that health is the greatest wealth, and everyone should dedicate at least half an hour daily to fitness activities. Delhi’s cold weather is ideal for building health—you can exercise indoors or outdoors, and the cold also boosts digestion, allowing you to enjoy your meals more freely. I’ve been part of the Fit India movement since 2021, and since I was in Delhi this weekend, I couldn’t miss the opportunity to join the Indian Army jawans for this cycling event. Riding alongside them was a tremendous honor. This government initiative is a wonderful step towards fostering a culture of fitness because a strong nation is built by fit citizens.

Amid lively selfies and fun interactions, a push-up challenge added excitement to the event. Commenting on the initiative, Mayank Shrivastav, Deputy Director General of the Sports Authority of India (SAI), said, “Our honorable Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisions India as a fit nation. Three weeks ago, Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya launched the Sundays on Cycle initiative. Cycling is not only an easy and affordable way to stay fit but also serves as a sustainable mode of transport for short distances, helping to combat rising pollution. Over the past three weeks, more than 2,400 such events have been held nationwide, featuring Olympians, Paralympians, athletes, and cycling club members. The enthusiasm of participants from all walks of life and age groups reflects how this initiative has truly captured the nation’s imagination.
