Engineers’ Day is celebrated on September 15th each year in India to honor the contributions of engineers to society and to commemorate the birth anniversary of Sir Mokshagundam Visvesvaraya, a visionary engineer.

The Origin of Engineers’ Day

Visvesvaraya was born in 1861 and initially studied for a Bachelor of Arts degree at the University of Mysore. However, he later changed his focus to engineering and graduated from the College of Science in Pune, one of the oldest engineering schools in Asia.

After graduating, Visvesvaraya began his career in the Public Works Department for the Government of Bombay. He worked on several complex projects, including developing a patented irrigation system with water floodgates at the Khadakvasla reservoir near Pune and constructing the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam in Mysore.

Visvesvaraya’s work helped to improve the lives of millions of people in India. He is considered one of the greatest engineers in Indian history.
