Raksha Bandhan: A Time to Celebrate the Bond Between Siblings

Raksha Bandhan is a popular Hindu festival that celebrates the bond between siblings. It is also known as Rakhi Purnima, Rakhi, or Rakhri. The festival is celebrated on the full moon day of the Shravan month in the Hindu calendar.

The word “raksha” means “protection,” and “bandhan” means “bond.” So, Raksha Bandhan literally means “the bond of protection.” The festival is a symbol of the love and protection between siblings.

On this day, sisters tie a colorful thread called a “rakhi” on their brother’s wrist, and pray for his long life and well-being. In return, the brother promises to always protect his sister.

The festival is believed to have originated in ancient India, and is mentioned in the Mahabharata epic. According to the epic, the Pandava prince Arjun was on his way to battle when his sister Draupadi tied a rakhi on his wrist and asked him to protect her. Arjun promised to always protect her, and he went on to win the battle.

Raksha Bandhan is a popular festival in India, and is also celebrated in other parts of the world with a large Indian diaspora. The festival is a time for siblings to come together and renew their bonds of love and protection. It is also a time for families to get together and celebrate.

The reason why Raksha Bandhan is celebrated on two days is because the full moon day of Shravan month in the Hindu calendar falls on both these days. The auspicious time to tie a rakhi is between 9:02 pm and 11 pm on Wednesday, August 30, 2023. However, if someone is unable to perform the ceremony on Wednesday, they can do so until 7 am on Thursday morning, August 31, 2023.

Bhadra is an inauspicious time period in the Hindu calendar. It is believed that tying a rakhi during Bhadra kal can bring bad luck to the brother.

This year, Bhadra kal will be from 11:00 am on August 30 to 9:03 pm on the same day. Therefore, it is not advisable to tie a rakhi during this time period.

If you are unable to tie the rakhi on August 30, you can do so on August 31, after 7:05 am.

It is important to note that these are just beliefs and there is no scientific evidence to support them. However, many people still choose to avoid tying a rakhi during Bhadra kal, just to be on the safe side.
