PM Modi arrives in South Africa for BRICS summit
Narendra Modi arrives in South Africa for a three-day visit. During his visit, he will attend the 15th BRICS summit and hold bilateral meetings with a number of world leaders
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting South Africa from August 22 to 24 at the invitation of South African President Cyril Ramaphosa. South Africa is hosting the first in-person BRICS summit since 2019.
In his departure statement in New Delhi, Mr. Modi highlighted BRICS’s commitment to cooperation in a variety of areas. BRICS is a platform for the member countries to discuss and deliberate on issues that are of concern to the developing world, including economic development and the reform of the global order.

Our cooperation in diverse sectors such as trade and investment, defense, and culture has helped to bring our two countries closer. I am eager to visit Greece and embark on a new era in our multifaceted ties. I will also be engaging with the Indian community there.
The BRICS economic alliance is holding a three-day summit in Johannesburg’s financial district of Sandton. The meeting is expected to discuss ways to strengthen the bloc’s political and economic influence in the developing world.
Chinese President Xi Jinping’s participation in the summit is a sign of China’s commitment to the BRICS alliance. Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate via video link due to an international arrest warrant against him.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to be a key player at the summit, along with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.
The BRICS summit is expected to focus on strengthening cooperation among developing countries. This is in line with the shared interests of Russia and China, who are both seeking to challenge the dominance of Western countries in global institutions. The summit is also expected to attract the attention of other developing countries that are considering joining BRICS.

The US and EU are monitoring the developments in BRICS with concern, as they see the potential for increased Russian and Chinese influence to challenge their interests. The summit is also likely to discuss challenging the dominance of the US dollar in global financial systems.
