In 1998, Vajpayee led the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to victory in the general elections. He was the first non-Congress prime minister to serve a full five-year term. During his time as prime minister, Vajpayee oversaw a period of economic growth and stability. He also played a key role in normalizing relations with Pakistan and other neighboring countries.
