Facebook Birthday 2023: History, Significance and Growth of the Social Media Platform over the Year

On 4th February Facebook Birthday is observed every year. This time social platform will be celebrating its 20th birthday! From low ranking start in a Harvard dorm room to the big tech steam roller is today, this platform  had a huge effect on how  users communicate and interact with their friends and family.

History and its Growth over the Years

4th February’2004 is Facebook’s Birthday. This site was founded by Mark Zuckerberg while he was a student at Harvard University. Earlier it was named as ‘The Facebook’ and only available to Harvard students.

Within one day of its launch, its information spread to other Ivy League schools. By the end of same year, the social media platform become popular and reached around 1 million users.

In next year 2005, any person with a valid email address had the access to use the social media to communicate with others. It also introduced ‘new feed feature’ and ‘Like’ option.

In 2006, Facebooks headquarters shifted to Palo Alto, California. Indeed 2007 was a big year for Facebook. After the launch of its developer platform, started for high school students, reached 50 million users and first time introduces the option of the “Profile Picture”.

In 2008 it witness the introduction of Facebook’s first ever major redesign.

In 2009 it introduced its own messaging option, reached 200 million users, launched the “Like” option on various websites and introduced mini- feeds and profile boxes on 3rd – party websites.

2010 witness the launch of Facebook places, Deals and Groups Features, also the start of the Facebook “F” Logo.

In 2011 it introduced Timeline to all profiles, video calling, group chat and @ Facebook.com email ID for its users.

In 2012, Facebook purchased Instagram for $ 1billion.

By 2014, Facebook had about 1 billion users! In 2015, Facebook introduced “Reactions” which is an extension of the “Like” option that permits users to express different emotions via emoji’s or stickers beyond just ‘liking’ someone’s post.

The media platform is likely to grow in developing nations where internet use is becoming more common in coming years.

This day is special for us. It is a day to observe how far we have reached and to remember how much Facebook means to us. This media platform connects us closer to the loved ones. Also it allows to express its users thought, felling and experiences with people worldwide.
