India Slipped to 132nd place in Human Development Index

According to a report released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP), India has slipped to 132nd position out of 191 countries in the Human Development Index program 2021. India’s HDI value of 0.6333 places the country in the medium human development category, which is lower than its value of 0.645 in the 2020 report.

India was ranked 131st out of 189 countries in the Human Development Index in the year 2020. “ Like global trends, in the case of INDIA, the HDI value was 0.645 in 2019, which has came down to 0.6333 in 2021, which can be attributed to the decline in Life Expectancy Report (from 69.7 to 67.2 years), the report said.

The expected year of schooling in India is 11.9 years and the average year of schooling is 6.7 years. Human Development, as a measure of a nation’s health, education and median income, has declined for two consecutive years- 2020 and 2021 compared to the Five- years before that.

Reduced the Impact of Inequality on Human Development

According to the UNDP report, the impact of crisis like Russia Ukraine war, Corona epidemic etc has affected the development of India and other countries of the world. UNDP Resident Representative Shoko Noda said about the recent report that despite the decline in Human Development Index globally there is good news for India.

According to report the impact of inequality on human development is less in 2019. He pointed out that India is bringing 5 the human development gap between men and women faster than the world.

The growth story in India reflects the country’s investment towards inclusive growth, social security, gender- responsive policies.

People around the world facing constant crisis

Layers of uncertainty are piling up and destabilizing life in unprecedented ways, according to the Human Development Report (Uncertain Times- Unsettlement lives: Shaping our future in a Transforming World).

UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner said that people around) the world are facing constant crisis. Our cost of living has increased and the energy crisis is increasing continuously. However, the energy crisis has made us to implement  quick fixes such as Subsidizing fossil fuels.

The immediate relief strategy is delaying long – term systematic changes, which is what we must do.
