OnePlus to Replace Alert Slider with Customizable Smart Button

On Monday, OnePlus revealed its plan to replace the iconic Alert Slider with a new customizable smart button. The Alert Slider, a staple on all OnePlus flagship smartphones, allows users to switch sound profiles without unlocking the device. However, the company is now reconsidering its hardware limitations and aims to introduce a more advanced alternative—similar to Apple’s Action Button.

In a community post, OnePlus CEO Pete Lau announced the decision, referring to the Alert Slider as his “favorite feature” and a “symbol of thoughtful design.” He explained that OnePlus has been exploring ways to enhance its functionality for the past three years. Lau noted that the Alert Slider occupies significant space in the device and is limited to a single function—adjusting sound profiles. While the company considered making it customizable, its fixed physical position made this impractical.
